Saint Martin's-mas
The Auburn Christmas Festival coincides with the feast of St. Martin, the patron saint of wine vintners, who, while riding his white horse across field & meadow, released the first snow of the season from the folds of his cloak. In Europe, St Martin's Day was one of feasting, and also when the first of the new wine was drunk. Similarly, the Auburn Christmas Festival "is" the celebratory "bringing in of the season" by the festival artists and musicians to the Auburn area.
